Speakland Summer Camp: Kids Found Their Voice in English and Their Hands in Chocolate-Making

Summer is a time for rest, new experiences, and friendships. At Železiarne Podbrezová, we believe that caring for our employees also means supporting their families. That’s why we were once again delighted to organize the traditional Speakland language camp, held this year in the beautiful village of Bystrá, in the heart of the Low Tatras.
Over the course of seven days, children aged 8 to 15 immersed themselves in English, creativity, teamwork, and fun — all within a safe and inspiring environment.

English as Part of the Fun, Not a Duty

Speakland wasn’t about traditional learning. On the contrary – English became a natural part of each day. The children used it in games, sports, trips, and even during evening activities. No tests, no grades, no desks — just a living language they absorbed spontaneously and with joy. Experienced teachers and animators created a friendly atmosphere where every child could feel safe, motivated, and supported.
The result? After just a few days, the kids were noticeably more confident speaking English — with enthusiasm, without fear of making mistakes, and with growing self-esteem.

Custom-Made Chocolate and Team Adventures

One of the most popular activities was the chocolate project, where the children created their own brand of chocolate – coming up with a name, ingredients, packaging, and even an advertisement.
In addition, they took part in various themed games, creative challenges, and group workshops that developed both collaboration and presentation skills.
There were also plenty of outdoor activities and trips — a hike to Krpáčovo, a visit to the bowling alley in Bystrá, sports competitions, and evening programs that strengthened team spirit and created unforgettable memories.

What Did the Kids Think?

Matej Škvarka, 14:
“This is my first time at Speakland. It’s really nice here, and the animators are kind to us. My roommates can be noisy sometimes, but otherwise everything is great. We speak English with the animators. I wanted to test how good I am at it and get away from screens since I spend a lot of time at the computer at home. The camp met my expectations. I’m happy I can now communicate in English.”
Dávid Mucha, 14:
“This is my fifth time at Speakland. It’s a pleasant environment with beautiful surroundings. Every year I improve my English. I have a great roommate and a skilled team. We do a lot of activities — swimming in Krpáčovo, visiting the Bystrá Cave, and earning fake paper money through team challenges. The camp definitely achieved its purpose.”
Libuša Flochová, 11:
“I’ve been to Speakland before. There are fewer of us than I’m used to, but everything else is fine. I came for fun and the different activities. I’m also improving my English, which is great.”
Lívia Flochová, 14:
“This is my second time here, and I enjoy it every year. I always meet friends I already know, and we agreed to come back together. I’m glad we met again. My English isn’t perfect, but I’m improving and speaking more fluently — which was one of my reasons for coming.”
Vivien Papcúnová, 14:
“This is my third time at the camp. This year is just as fun — lots of great people, new friends, and a nice group atmosphere. The teachers are also kind. I came to improve my English, which isn’t my strongest subject, but I’ve gotten better. I especially like the friendships I’ve made here.”
Daniela Muránska, 14:
“This is my third year. Tále is beautiful, fun, and full of laughter. My English has definitely improved, but I still have more to work on. The camp helps a lot. What I like most is meeting so many new friends.”
Boris Koštiaľ, 14:
“I’ve been to Speakland before, and it’s just as great again this year. We’re surrounded by nature and good friends. My favorite part was swimming in Krpáčovo. My English is getting better, and camps like this really help. I’ll definitely feel a bit sad when it’s time to leave.”

An Investment That Makes Sense

By organizing the Speakland camp, Železiarne Podbrezová supports the language development, creativity, and collaboration skills of our employees’ children.
We believe learning through experience is the best way to motivate children — and a powerful expression of our care for the company community.
Speakland isn’t just a camp — it’s a place where children learn, have fun, and create lifelong memories.
